El caso Dreyfus en La Prensa : modernización periodística y sensacionalismo en Buenos Aires

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la cobertura que realizó el diario La Prensa del juicio al que fue sometido el capitán Alfred Dreyfus en 1899. Se sostiene que el tratamiento que el diario hizo del caso configuró una instancia de experimentación que le permitió afirmar el liderazgo que poseía en el campo periodístico porteño. El trabajo consta de dos partes. En la primera se examina la operación de construcción de la noticia, es decir, los recursos puestos en práctica para canalizar y presentar ante los lectores el enorme caudal de información sobre el caso. En segundo lugar, se consideran las estrategias de escritura a través de las cuales se fueron plasmando conexiones emocionales que volvieron atractiva para el público local la historia del oficial francés.

This article analyses the La Prensa newspaper’s coverage of French Captain Alfred Dreyfus’ trial in 1899. It argues that the experimental techniques used by the newspaper to cover the trial allowed the newspaper to uphold its leadership in Buenos Aires ́s journalistic field. The essay is divided into two sections. The first section examines how the news coverage was constructed. It studies the sources and journalistic techniques used by La Prensa to display and organize the vast amount of information related to the case. In the second part, the article describes the writing strategies employed by the newspaper to create emotional connections with the readers, increasing the attractiveness of the story for local audiences.
