Figurational sociology, developed by Norbert Elias proposes a comprehensive cultural study within western world and in the long term. In this theoretical perspective, the constitution of the “modern” subject takes place at the same time administrative structures of the rational state are established. The development of the civilizing process involves the consolidation of a shared framework of certainty socially determined. Also, this approach involves some degree of uncertainty inherent to social interactions as a constituent part of the dynamic processes of psycho and sociogenesis. The culturalist perspective by Pierre Bourdieu concentrates in the study of certain socially structuring structures that reflect prevailing power relations in a society. Schemes of perception and thought generate a habitus: a cluster of shared certainties that turn individual actions into social ones. Upgrading and updating of these structures form a cluster of past interactions. It functions as a backdrop of “the social network” which combines the cultural elements available with power interactions. This study intends to establish contact points and differences between figurational perspective of Norbert Elias and Pierre Bourdieu ́s culturalist approach referring to the certainties and uncertainties of “the social”. So as to add complexity to this essay two more concepts are included: the potentiality of power –from the radical approach by Steven Lukes– and the notion of reflexivity from structuration theory, by Anthony Giddens. The aim is to arrive at a characterization of “the social” through an analysis of the certainties and uncertainties as an inherent tension of sociological thought.es
