El realismo científico de Ian Hacking : de los electrones a las enfermedades mentales transitorias

Abstract

En este artículo pretendemos trabajar acerca del realismo científico defendido por Ian Hacking, recorriendo el camino desde Representar e intervenir (1983), hasta Rewriting the Soul (1995), Mad Travelers (1998), ¿La construcción social de qué? (2001) e Historical Ontology (2002). A lo largo de este recorrido, analizaremos la faceta quizá más conocida del trabajo de este filósofo. Es decir, su denuncia del empobrecimiento de la filosofía de la ciencia al haberse concentrado en la teoría y la representación, y las consecuencias que ello ha tenido para el debate realismo/antirrealismo; y su propuesta de jerarquizar la intervención, la experimentación, y su defensa de un realismo de entidades, basado principalmente en dos argumentos: la intervención y la coincidencia. En sus últimos trabajos, en los cuales se define a sí mismo como un nominalista dinámico, veremos cómo a través de las enfermedades mentales transitorias, propone, para trabajar en ciencias sociales, nociones como las de make up people, con la que pretende reflejar la adecuación entre las clases de seres y acciones humanas y su categorización. Por ultimo, analizaremos su noción de efecto bucle de las clases humanas, esto es, la interacción entre la gente y las formas de clasificarla a ella y sus experiencias. Luego de este somero recorrido, analizaremos algunos de los valiosos aportes de este filósofo, pero también cuestionaremos otros aspectos de su pensamiento.

In this article we pretend to work about the scientific realism sustained by Ian Hacking, following the way from Representing and Intervening, to Rewriting the Soul (1995), Mad Travelers (1998), The social construction of what? And Historical Ontology (2002). Throughout this course, we will analyze the best known side of this philosopher. Namely, his report about the poorness of the philosophy of science due to its focus on theory and representation and the consequences it has had for the realism/antirealism debate. On the other hand, we will draw on his proposal to emphasize the intervention, the experimentation, and his support of the realism of entities, mainly based on two arguments: intervention and coincidence. In his last works, where he defines himself as a dynamic nominalist, we will see how through transient mental illnesses, he proposes to work in social sciences notions such as make up people –with which he tries to reflect the fitness among human beings and actions and its categorizations. Finally we analyze the notion of looping effect of human kinds, namely: the interactions between people and ways of classifying them and their behaviors. After this brief course, we will analyze some of the valuable contributions of this philosopher, but we will also discuss other aspects of his thinking.
