La “pampa submarina”. Historia de una definición científica y política sobre la vida marina (1900-1930)

Abstract

En el presente artículo abordo el desarrollo histórico de las primeras investigaciones que problematizaron cómo se distribuía la vida marina en función de parámetros medioambientales, en las primeras tres décadas del siglo XX en Argentina. Estos trabajos fueron realizados por Martín Doello Jurado, naturalista y director del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales a partir de 1924. Sus trabajos contaron con el apoyo de diversos oficiales de la Armada Argentina. Particularmente fue relevante el rol de Segundo Storni, quien se preocupó por la protección y explotación de los recursos del Mar Territorial Argentino. Me interesa indagar cómo Doello Jurado incorporó las problemáticas movilizadas por Storni en la definición científica de la vida marina. Asimismo, busco resaltar el carácter novedoso de las investigaciones de Doello Jurado respecto de otras similares que se estaban desarrollando a nivel internacional. A través del análisis de documentos de la Armada y publicaciones de naturalistas, rastreo qué tipo de preguntas se hicieron, cuáles fueron sus intereses y cómo los buques de la Armada permitieron el desarrollo de investigaciones novedosas. Concluyo que, a través de la construcción de la noción de la “pampa submarina”, como objeto de investigación, Doello Jurado articuló no solo sus preocupaciones científicas y algunas líneas de investigación que se estaban desarrollando en instituciones centrales, sino también los problemas estratégicos planteados por la Armada. Así, el artículo indaga en la estrecha imbricación entre problemas sociales y de conocimiento, eje tematizado por los estudios sobre Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad.

In this article, I address the historical development of the first investigations that problematized the distribution of marine life based on environmental parameters in Argentina during the first three decades of the 20th century. This work was carried out by Martín Doello Jurado, a naturalist and director of the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences from 1924. His work was supported by various officers of the Argentine Navy. The role of Segundo Storni, who was particularly relevant, was concerned with the protection and exploitation of the resources of the Argentine Territorial Sea.In this article, I address the historical development of the first investigations that problematized the distribution of marine life based on environmental parameters in Argentina during the first three decades of the 20th century. My interest is to explore how Doello Jurado incorporated the issues raised by Storni into the scientific definition of marine life. I also seek to highlight the innovative nature of Doello Jurado's research compared to similar ones being developed internationally. Through the analysis of Navy documents and naturalists' publications, I trace the types of questions they asked, their interests, and how Navy ships enabled the development of innovative research. I conclude that, through the construction of the notion of the "submarine pampa" as an object of research, Doello Jurado articulated not only his scientific concerns and some lines of research being developed in central institutions, but also the strategic problems posed by the Navy. Thus, the article highlights the close interweaving of social and knowledge problems, a theme addressed by the studies on Science, Technology, and Society.
