Traveling writing and scientific construction of the world : Alexander von Humboldt’s notebook of Italy
Resumen
En los inicios de toda pesquisa histórica, policial o judicial hace falta una huella, un indicio material, algún objeto enigmático a partir del cual se nutre la intriga y se desarrolla la investigación (Foucault, 1994). La libreta que acompañó a Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) en su viaje a Italia (1805), olvidada entre los papeles de quien fuera uno de los hombres más célebres de su tiempo, retenido por la historia como el autor del “Cosmos”, significó el punto de partida de la trama de la investigación que aquí se esboza: una encuesta sobre la articulación entre las prácticas de viaje, las formas de la escritura y la construcción de la ciencia en Humboldt y una reflexión histórica y epistemológica sobre las prácticas y objetivos del viaje científico alrededor de 1800. This paper analyzes the notebook that Humboldt had on his trip to Italy (1805), an object forgotten among his papers and sketchbooks. This notebook represents the departing point of the research plot that is presented in the following pages: an inquiry on the articulation of traveling practices, writing techniques, and the construction of science in Humboldt’s work, and a historical and epistemological discussion on the practices and goals of scientific traveling around 1800.
