El surgimiento, hacia el último tercio del siglo XIX , de una gran cantidad de sociedades espiritistas y ramas de la Sociedad Teosófica, originalmente en las metrópolis norteamericanas y europeas, y tiempo más tarde en Latinoamérica, es un problema que incumbe al estudio de la “cultura científica” en un sentido amplio, dado que se produjo una zona de cruce entre las inquietudes espirituales y la voluntad de conocimiento científico, una zona donde la amplia gama de grises que mediaba entre el positivismo más ortodoxo y el pensamiento religioso cobro una inusitada resolución simbólica. The emergence, towards the last third of the nineteenth century, of a large number of spiritual societies and branches of the Theosophical Society, originally in North American and European metropolises, and later in Latin America, is a problem that concerns the study of the “ scientific culture ”in a broad sense, given that there was an intersection zone between spiritual concerns and the will of scientific knowledge, an area where the wide range of grays that mediated between the most orthodox positivism and religious thought took an unusual resolution symbolic.
