Imágenes del otro social en el Brasil de fines del siglo XIX : Canudos como espejo en ruinas

Abstract

Este trabajo indaga en torno al diálogo entre ensayo, crónica y fotografía en la aprehensión de los “otros” sociales. En particular, se centra en la representación de la represión y la resistencia de Canudos en el Brasil de fines del siglo XIX. En esta dirección, aborda varios discursos que dialogan y polemizan entre sí: el ensayo Os sertoes, de Euclides da Cunha, las crónicas de Machado de Assis referidas a los conselheiristas (publicadas en la Gazeta de Notícias entre 1894 y 1897), y el registro visual del fotógrafo bahiano Flávio de Barros. Esas textualidades se convierten -acaso sin querer- en la inversión de los símbolos fotográficos, pictóricos y discursivos gestados para celebrar el éxito de la modernización republicana.

This work inquires into the dialogue between the essay, the chronicle and the photography in the apprehension of the social “others”. In particular, it is focused in the representation of the repression and the resistance of Canudos in Brazil at the end of the XIX century. In this direction, it studies several discourses that dialogue and debate to each other: the essay Os sertoes of Euclides da Cunha, the chronicles of de Machado de Assis about the conselheiristas (published in the Gazeta de Notícias between 1894 and 1897), and the visual corpus of the bahianian photographer Flávio de Barros. Those texts becomes -maybe unintentionally- in the inversion of the photographic, pictorial and discursive symbols gestated to celebrate the success of the republican modernization.
