Divulgación científica, una misión imposible

Abstract

El siguiente artículo plantea que quizás el mayor problema de la divulgación científica está en la base de su legitimación, lo que en la actualidad está tomando el peligroso perfil de una preceptiva: la difusión de la ciencia tiende a institucionalizarse como parte del sistema científico y a reproducir los mecanismos de producción académica. Y genera, por cierto, una concepción equivocada del rigor científico en los procesos de divulgación y la instauración de un circuito de realimentación y corrección entre el sistema académico y el periodismo especializado en ciencias. Como ejemplo de esta preceptiva, y como parte de un mecanismo academicista que conduce a la paradoja de que el crecimiento de la presencia de lo científico y tecnológico en los medios va unido a una reducción del público interesado y a una restricción de su alcance, se relata una experiencia institucional de divulgación científica en la Argentina, considerada exitosa por la propia comunidad de investigadores.

The following article works on the premise that perhaps the greatest problem in the diffusion of scientific knowledge lies in the basis of its legitimization, which at the present time is in serious danger of becoming a fixed canon. Thus the dissemination of scientific knowledge tends to become institutionalized as part of the scientific order and to reproduce the mechanisms of academic production. Moreover, this produces a mistaken conception of scientific rigor in the processes of diffusion and the establishment of a feedback/correction circuit between the academic system and scientific journalism. An institutional experiment in the dissemination of scientific knowledge in Argentina which was considered to have been a success by the community of researchers themselves is given as an example of this canon. It is also part and parcel of an academicist mechanism which leads to the paradoxical state of affairs that the growth of science and technology in the media goes hand in hand with a fall in the number of people interested in them and with a restriction of their range.
